ILT conversion

How to convert instructor-led training to eLearning

ILT conversion is not a copy-and-paste process. The goal is to preserve what works in the classroom while redesigning practice, feedback, discussion, and assessment for digital delivery.

Conversion principles

  • Start by separating content learners need to know from decisions they need to practice.
  • Do not convert every classroom slide into an eLearning screen.
  • Replace instructor prompts with scenarios, feedback, job aids, checks, or blended activities.

Audit the classroom course

List the learning objectives, discussion points, demonstrations, activities, assessments, worksheets, job aids, and facilitator notes.

The slide deck is usually only part of the course. The instructor’s explanations, examples, and corrections may be the most valuable content.

Classroom content transformed into a digital video lesson
Classroom instruction is restructured as focused digital lessons, media, and online practice.

Choose the right conversion format

Some ILT programs should become self-paced modules. Others should become blended programs with eLearning prework, virtual sessions, practice labs, manager coaching, or job aids.

The right format depends on complexity, risk, learner access, and how much practice the learner needs before performing the task.

Design new learner practice

Classroom training often depends on discussion and instructor feedback. eLearning needs designed substitutes: branching choices, scenario feedback, simulations, reflection prompts, knowledge checks, and performance support tools.

The goal is not to reproduce the classroom hour-for-hour. The goal is to produce the same or better performance outcome.

Pilot before full rollout

A small pilot can expose unclear instructions, LMS access issues, completion tracking problems, and knowledge gaps before the full audience launches.

Use pilot feedback to refine language, pacing, examples, and assessment items.

FAQ

Conversion questions

Should every ILT course become self-paced eLearning?

No. Some courses work better as blended learning, virtual instructor-led training, or eLearning plus practice activities.

Can PCG work from facilitator guides?

Yes. Facilitator guides are often more useful than slide decks because they show examples, discussion prompts, timing, and instructor intent.

What is the biggest ILT conversion mistake?

Treating conversion as slide migration instead of redesigning practice and feedback for digital delivery.

Need help applying this to a real project?

Send the project goal, audience, materials, timeline, and review needs. PCG can recommend a realistic path forward.
